Frank Wood was the landlord, a typical landlord, short stout with a beer belly, always wore a 3 piece suit, wife he same shape. At the time the pub was part of Beasley Breweries. He died in the pub about 1950.
His wife took over after him, but she moved away to Brighton to run a confectionery shop.
During WW2 it is rumoured he kept a pig in the cellar.

Bob Simonds, married but the wife did not help in the pub. Not well liked, and used to run a cribbage school in a Friday evening.

Tommy and Popsy Hennings were there, their daughter Amanda was my husband's secretary . They went back to Dublin after leaving the pub for family reasons in Dublin. They ran The Beech Tree prior to The Chatt. Amanda stayed here and married , unfortunately she died quite young.
I was born in Chatterton Road (no. 85) in 1946 and left in 1950. My Dad frequented the pub post war, he had been a POW. I had a lot of family in the area so I should imagine it was well visited by them.
I still shop in the road, mainly Diplocks, Chemist and PO, Co -op occasionally. I still feel at home in the area.
friends tell me he was very popular and used to push the boat out Sunday Lunchtimes, the pub being packed due to the Sunday meat and cash raffle. He might have had 2 daughters.

1982 to 1985

In 1982 the pub was run by an Irish couple, I remember the husband being called Dermont.
The pub was a real old world pub, with a real log fire, and beside it an old piano.
I dont think the couple had any children, and in 1985 they spit up, the wife taking over the pub, and Dermot taking over the Green grocers, 2 years later to sell it to Gayless and Daughters.
Apparently he commissioned a painting to be made of the Chatterton Arms.

I remember Fiona quite well. he had a young son and daughter, and they all grew up in the pub. She spent a lot of her time both sides of the bar, and organised a lot of events. I remember there were a lot of Pub Quiz nights, and what were called theme nights, I remember going to what turned out to be a Scented Candle Night, I fancied the candle seller so much, paid for some candles but never picked them up. She trained her staff very well, at one point had them handing out receipts with every drink. Something happened in the end, and she moved out with her family to live near Southborough Lane, and she went on to be Manageress of the Bear Factory Shop in The Glades, Bromley.
